What is Transformative Coaching
There are three key layers to coaching, each serving a unique purpose and focusing on different aspects of a client's journey. They are often referred to as performance, developmental and transformative coaching.
Performance Coaching is a goal-oriented approach focused on achieving a clear outcome through a specific set of actions. It's particularly useful when you have a defined issue and need to find a structured path forward. The goal is to move you from where you are now to where you want to be, through focused effort and accountability.
While performance coaching helps you achieve a specific goal, Developmental Coaching focuses on building the skills and competencies to repeatedly handle similar challenges. This approach is about personal growth, equipping you with internal resources to deal with multiple issues in your life. However, since it focuses on changing behavior without addressing your underlying beliefs, the change it facilitates is often not long-lasting or sustainable.
Transformative Coaching is the deepest level of coaching, designed to create profound and lasting change by shifting your internal world. It goes beyond external actions and learned behaviors, to explore the beliefs and internal narratives that shape your reality. This approach aims for a true paradigm shift by helping you change your fundamental assumptions. By addressing the root cause, transformative coaching not only achieves the outcomes of performance and developmental coaching, but also leads to sustained success and long-term personal growth.
Key aspects of transformative coaching
-
Instead of just tackling a specific problem, a transformative coach helps you explore the underlying beliefs, assumptions and psychological patterns that are contributing to your challenges. The goal is to help you understand how you see things, as this impacts on how you deal with them.
-
A core part of the process involves helping you become more self-aware. Through powerful questions and dialogue, the coach creates a safe space for you to reflect on your values, strengths and fears and to challenge the mental frameworks that may be holding you back. It encourages self-reflection and helps you become more aware of your patterns, limitations and potential. It helps facilitate a deeper understanding of yourself and your relationship with the world.
-
The ultimate aim is to help you achieve a fundamental change in your "frame of reference" by delving into your underlying beliefs, values and assumptions that shape your worldview. This focus on inner transformation enables a shift in perspective, which can free you from limiting beliefs and open up new possibilities for how you think, feel and act.
-
Because the work is focused on these deep, internal shifts, the changes that result are often more lasting and impactful than those achieved through a goal-oriented, "quick-fix" approach. It helps you develop new ways of being that will support your ongoing growth and development.
-
Transformative coaching considers the client as a whole person— including your emotional, mental and spiritual dimensions—and also takes into account the wider systems you belong to, such as family, organisation, culture, recognising that these factors shape your experience. It acknowledges that change occurs at multiple levels and addresses the interconnectedness of these aspects.
-
It empowers you to take ownership of your life and create meaningful change. It fosters a sense of agency and self-efficacy, enabling you to realise your full potential.
